Sinopsis

El film está narrado desde el punto de vista de Michael (Ryan Reynolds), hijo mayor de -para quien lo ve de afuera- una pareja que es la viva imagen de la familia americana triunfadora.
Durante el viaje que éste realiza desde Nueva York a su ciudad natal en el Medio oeste del país, para asistir a la graduación de su madre, Lisa (Julia Robert), quien durante décadas había abandonado sus estudios universitarios para criar a sus hijos, sus pensamientos oscilan entre su presente, con un matrimonio en peligro de romperse, y especialmente los recuerdos de la amarga y conflictiva relación que tiene en la niñez con su padre (Willem Dafoe), extremadamente exigente.
A Michael, un prolífico escritor de intrascendentes novelas románticas, ni siquiera el discreta pedido de un autógrafo, de una azafata que lo admira, lo distrae de los temores que lo embargan, donde el único factor mitigante es la oportunidad de ver a su tía Jane (Emily Watson), la hermana menor de su madre y compañera de sus rebeldías juveniles.
Cuando con su hermana Ryne (Shannon Lucio), van en el coche desde el aeropuerto hacia la casa familiar, y ambos se esfuerzan por comunicarse, se cruzan con el accidente de tránsito que minutos antes han sufrido sus padres.
Mientras todos afrontan las consecuencias de esta contingencia, la realidad y el presente se alternan con escenas de los vívidos recuerdos de las tensas relaciones que mantenía con su progenitor, durante el verano en el que su tía Jane llega para quedarse a vivir con la familia.
El grave accidente, hace salir a la luz una realidad compleja en la historia de las relaciones de este supuesto modelo de familia. En el momento que Charles, el padre, es un profesor numerario camino a convertirse en rector de la universidad, su hermana está a punto de ingresar en una prestigiosa universidad de derecho, él es un célebre novelista romántico y la madre va a licenciarse
Ahora, deben suplantar los planes de lo que iba a ser una feliz celebración familiar.
En tanto Michael, se enfrenta a la fracturada relación con su padre, descubre muchas más cosas que desconocía de su madre y entabla un lazo más estrecho con su esposa, hermana y tía. En ese proceso, adquiere una mayor comprensión de lo que significa amar siendo adulto.
